South American mummy ritually sacrificed

A previously unidentified female mummy was killed in a ritual sacrifice in South America, new research has found.
A team of scientists analysed the skull to find evidence of a blunt trauma to the head, suggesting she died very quickly from the blow.
DNA analysis also revealed she suffered from a parasitic infection called Chagas disease, they write in Plos One.
Her symptoms indicated she would not have lived for much longer even if she had escaped her killers.
Chagas is still endemic in South America - especially those living in poverty - and can be deadly if not treated early.
Andreas Nerlich, co-author of the study from Munich University, Germany, said that the girl was likely to have come from a poor family.

"The parasite lives in mud-brick walls typical of those from lower social classes, not in stone houses or better equipped, cleaner surroundings," he told BBC News.
For more than 100 years, it was unclear where the mummy was from, but now detailed CT scans, injury reconstructions and DNA evidence have finally given clues to her origin.
The mummified woman is over 500 years old, and would have died in her early 20s.
She is thought to have arrived in Germany after a Bavarian princess brought her back from an expedition to South America in 1898.
Where exactly she would have lived remains unclear, but based on a stable isotope analysis of her bones and hair, her diet was rich in fish. The researchers therefore suggest she lived near the Peruvian or Northern Chilean coast line.
The rope which tied her plaits was made out of material that originated in South America and her skull formation was also typical of the Inca people.
She was killed and buried in a hot and dry sandy region that resulted in natural mummification. For many years, however, it was simply assumed she was a German bog body.
"We assumed she died in a ritual killing but we have no clear evidence from written sources," explained Prof Nerlich.
"Present-day techniques offer such a wealth of information that we can reconstruct various aspects of past lives, diseases and death."
The analysis will now help scientists understand the origin of the Chagas pathogen and its molecular construction.
Evidence of ritual sacrifice in South American mummies is well documented.
In the Incan empire, young girls were often given up to the sun god in religious rituals. The parents and local communities of sacrificed victims were consequently highly respected.
Emma Brown from the department of archaeological sciences at the University of Bradford, UK, who was not involved with the study, said that due to the lack of contextual data it was hard to definitively say that the mummy was a human sacrifice.
This individual is older than the usual profile of ritually killed females, who are typically around the age of 13 or 14," Dr Brown told the BBC
"It is important to recognise the historical context of this mummy. The radiocarbon dates cover the period of the Spanish conquest of the Americas.
"Historical records describe repressive and extreme forms of violence and recent bio-archaeological investigations of conquest-era cemeteries have revealed that many types of trauma, including massive blunt force cranial trauma [shown here] are quite common," she added.

Sports giant Adidas is suspending the sale of World Cup T-shirts

One read "Looking to score?" next to a scantily-dressed woman; another printed a heart shaped like a bikini-clad bottom with the phrase "I love Brazil".
Brazil's tourism board, Embratur, says it is vehemently against any products that link Brazil's image to sex appeal.
Adidas is one of the World Cup's main sponsors and its ball provider.
Following the controversy, the company said it was withdrawing the T-shirts - a limited edition meant for sale in the United States.
"Adidas always pays close attention to the opinion of its consumers and partners," its statement read.
'Sex appeal'
"Therefore, it is announcing that these products will not be sold anymore."
Earlier on Tuesday, the country's tourism ministry had already criticised the products saying "any links between national icons and images with sex appeal" were against the country's official marketing policies.
"Such an attitude indirectly contributes to committing crimes such as sexual child and adolescent exploitation," it said.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff also reacted, tweeting that Brazil was happy to greet tourists for the World Cup.
But her country was also ready to fight sexual tourism, Mrs Rousseff wrote.
In a statement, Brazil's Embratur said that "Brazil does not tolerate this type of crime on its territory."
Brazil says it has been trying to distance itself from the sexual stereotypes that marked the country for decades

Victoria Beckham wears winter woollen tights with open-toe sandals as she shops in Paris

While most people would avoid teaming tights with open-toed shoes where possible, Victoria Beckham made a point of wearing exactly that when she browsed what Paris' stores had to offer on Thursday.
The fashion designer kept out the chilly temperatures thanks to her dark woolly tights which she teamed with a mostly black ensemble.
Keeping her aviator sunglasses firmly on as she left department store Printemps, the 39-year-old failed to flash a smile despite being greeted by a crowd of fans.
The pop star turned designer wore an on-trend pleated midi skirt which hid her slim pins underneath.
Teaming it with a simple knit, Victoria made sure to add a colour injection to her ensemble which came in the form of a bright pink top underneath.
Clutching her phone tightly in her hand, the star's hair looked to be in perfect condition as she wore it down in soft wave over her shoulders.
However it was undoubtedly her tights and shoe combo that caught peoples attention as she strolled out into the street.
She tweeted in the morning to say: 'Bonjour Paris! Excited to be meeting customers at @Printemps today! x vb'
Before later adding: 'Thank u @Printemps for a great event today!' as she spends time in the French capital as part of the city's fashion week.
Victoria recently admitted her first experience of a fashion show was like 'another world'.
The singer-turned-designer found her first ever front row experience at a Versace show in Milan completely surreal and says it marked a turning point in her life.
Speaking in her new Skype Collaboration Project documentary, the 39-year-old icon recalled: 'When I was in the Spice Girls I got invited to go to a Versace fashion show, and I'd never been to a fashion show and Donatella Versace flew me, on a private plane with my friend, to Milan. It was all very glamorous and it was taking me into a completely different world.
'I've still got the dress that I wore - the black, leather dress - and funnily enough I saw Donatella not too long ago - we judged the Woolmark awards in London and I hadn't seen her for years and years and we had a chat whilst we were judging and she said, 'Do you remember when you came to Milan?' and I said, 'God, do I remember? Are you kidding, that was the most exciting thing I'd ever done."'
The style-savvy superstar also recalled her extreme anxiety before presenting her first collection because she wanted every last detail to be perfect.
She confessed: 'I felt really anxious, sick, nerves like I've never had nerves before. I'd worked really hard on this collection. I remember the night before I was downstairs with a florist in a pair of hotel slippers at about 4 o'clock in the morning - redoing the flowers because I didn't like the way that the flowers looked.'
Victoria Beckham had her big day at New York Fashion Week earlier in the month when she showed her collection for AW14 to the fashion masses but now the designer and ex-pop star is in Paris no doubt taking in a few shows of her designer friends. Oh and doing some shopping as well.

And today she stepped out in an altogether perfectly styled winter daytime look. The soft black knit, the grey tights, the pleated midi skirt, all from her latest fall 2014 line of course. It's ladylike and sophisticated and basically we want the lot.
The skirt in particular is catching our fashion eye. It's a very fashionable midi length, demure and understated. And the pleats add volume and a pleasing swoosh as she sidles by. Mrs Beckham is big on pleats in her own collections for both SS14 in adorable mini tennis dresses and the fall in longer looks so this is obviously a favourite aesthetic of hers.

If VB does it, you know you want to do it too so check out the grown up skirts we've found below. Pleats galore and not one over £50. Result!

Cameron gives the Queen a tour of Chequers after her first lunch at the PM's country retreat in two decades

The Queen and Prince Philip enjoyed lunch at Chequers today, for the first time in two decades.
David Cameron said he was 'delighted' to invite them to the Prime Minister’s country retreat after unearthing old photographs of a 1970 visit by US President Richard Nixon.
After a tour of the house, the rare occasion was marked by the Duke of Edinburgh planting an oak tree in the grounds.
Prime Ministers regularly use Chequers to host allies, world leaders and celebrities.
But the Queen has not been to the grace-and-favour home near Ellesborough in Buckinghamshire for 18 years, and has only ever been invited by Tory Prime Minister.
There were no trips under Gordon Brown, Tony Blair or Margaret Thatcher. The Queen last paid a visit when Sir John Major was prime minister in 1996.
After today's lunch Mr Cameron wrote on Twitter: 'Delighted to host Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh for lunch at Chequers today.'
A Downing Street spokesman said: ‘The last time the Queen visited Chequers in 1996 she planted an oak tree in the grounds and the Prime Minister thought this would be a nice thing to do on this occasion.’
The menu for today’s lunch included Scottish smoked salmon for starter, a main course of lamb with potato and vegetables and bread and butter pudding and icecream for dessert, followed by cheese and biscuits.
According to chef Alan Lavender, who worked at Chequers from 1986 until 2010, Sir John served the Queen warm marinated salmon before presenting her with a jar of home-made Chequers chutney.
Her first visit was in October 1970 when she joined the then-PM Edward Heath and US president Richard Nixon.
She was photographed outside the red bricked Tudor mansion with the PM, Nixon and his wife Pat.
‘The PM and the Queen see each other regularly and the Queen hosts the PM at the palace once a week,’ the Downing Street spokesman added.
‘The PM thought this would be a good opportunity to have lunch with him, to host her for a change when he had been at Chequers he found some old photos of previous visits by the Queen including a visit with President Nixon in 1970 and thought it would be nice to host her again.’
At the time of the Nixon lunch several hundred people gathered at the main entrance of the estate, with a few holding anti-American placards calling for peace in Vietnam.
The guests dined on fillet of sole with lobster, smoked salmon, roast sirloin of beef and ice cream with mangoes, strawberries and peaches.

Chequers and its 1,000 acre estate were bequeathed to the nation in 1917 by Sir Arthur Lee, an MP and director-general of food production.
Lloyd George became its first prime ministerial occupant in 1921.
The Queen has dined at Downing Street numerous times. In July 2012, she and the Duke of Edinburgh joined Mr Cameron, Mr Brown, Mr Blair and Sir John for a lunch to mark her Diamond Jubilee.

Traditionally, the Queen invites the Prime Minister to make an annual visit to Balmoral, her private .residence in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, each September

Drogba and Luiz rekindle old times with secret handshake before Chelsea clash

It's been hard to remember at times this week that Didier Drogba actually plays for Galatasaray rather than Chelsea.
The man who won the Champions League for the Blues was playing against them on Wednesday and he had a special welcome for David Luiz.
The pair must have had some kid of secret handshake during their time together in London and spontaneously fell back into the habit when they met at the Turk Telecom Arena.
Chelsea went ahead through Fernando Torres but were pegged back late in the game by Aurelien Chedjou.
Jose Mourinho praised his team after the game but he couldn't hide his disappointment his team failed to hold on to their slender lead going into the next match.
It sets up an appetising second leg at Stamford Bridge in three weeks time with Chelsea already in the driving seat thanks to their away goal.
Luiz didn't take any part in the match as he is still recovering from injury but Drogba will be expecting a huge reception
when he goes back for the next time.

Orange Crush! Madrid run riot in Germany as Bale, Benzema and Ronaldo bring back memories of Di Stefano, Gento and Puskas

They will have to win a few cups before they become truly worthy of the comparison but there were shades of Real Madrid's all-conquering forward line of the fifties Alfredo Di Stefano, Paco Gento and Ferenc Puskas on Wednesday night as the 'BBC' ran riot in Gelsenkirchen.
'Bale, Benzema and Cristiano' have now scored 70 goals between them this season and Real Madrid as a team have clocked up 110 in all competitions. Cristiano Ronaldo leads the way with 36 goals – 11 of them in the Champions League and he is now only nine goals behind the competition’s top scorer Raul who scored 71 times in the European Cup.
On Wednesday night he was ably supported by Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale as they mauled sorry Schalke to make a mockery of the club's so-called German jinx by becoming the first visiting team ever to score six in the European Cup on German soil. Benzema has now scored 20 goals this season and Bale has 14.
The Welshman’s first on Wednesday night was as good as any goal scored in Europe this season, much as his strike at the weekend against Elche was a candidate for La Liga’s goal of the season.
'We prepared the game to perfection' he said afterwards paying tribute to Real's English coach Paul Clement who saw the masterplan come off to the last detail sat on the bench in the Veltins Arena alongside Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane.
Ancelotti said: 'It was the perfect performance, the players were fantastic, it will be difficult to repeat.'
Marca declared the stunning six-goal salvo 'clockwork orange' and Diario AS hailed Madrid’s 'bionic' forward line. There was some praise for Jose Mourinho for having laid the foundations for such a performance in his three seasons at the club but there was also a recognition that Ancelotti’s calmer management style has lifted a weight from his player’s shoulders.
Ancelotti told Gazzatta dello Sport last week: 'We have some players here who are still boys here but we also have men, husbands, fathers and they don’t need a sergeant major'. On Wednesday his soldiers marched in unison with none of the internal conflicts that clouded last season hanging over them.
Ancelotti’s front-three stole the headlines but there were other signs of how he has the dressing room united in their attempt to land Madrid’s 10th European Cup.
There was an embrace between the coach and Angel Di Maria when he came off in the second half.
The Argentine had pushed for a move in the winter transfer window upset that Bale had taken his place but Ancelotti has converted the winger into a highly effective box-to-box midfielder.
Iker Casillas continues to be second choice in the league but last night he set a new Spanish record of 952 minutes without conceding a goal. Only Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's late thunderbolt from the edge of the area could end the record run established in the Champions League and the Spanish Cup.
Even young midfielder Isco who has been left out by the Italian coach for most games this season came on and chased and harried forcing the error that led to goal number six. 'The best Madrid side in a very long time' declared Marca.
Madrid have now gone 27 games unbeaten with 23 wins in that time; no wonder the club’s supporters feel after three semi-final appearances they are ready to go one better this season.

Michelle Rodriguez thinks Cara Delavigne is The One and she wants a baby!' Fast and Furious star's close confidant reveals she's smitten with stunning Brit - but supermodel's family are not that happy

They have made no secret of their growing love after spending the past few months jet setting around the world together.
And one of Michelle Rodriguez's closest confidants has revealed she is so in love with British supermodel Cara Delevingne that she believes she is 'the one' - and wants to start a family with her.
In an exclusive interview with MailOnline, the friend of the Fast and Furious star - who has asked to remain unnamed - reveals how Michelle, 35, is so besotted by Cara, 21, that she has already told pals she would love a baby with her.
But while the actress is planning her future with Cara - who is 14 years younger than her - we can reveal the Mulberry model’s family is terrified of the influence the wayward star is having on the top model who has become the toast of the fashion industry.
The source, who Michelle regularly confides in, said: 'Michelle comes from a broken home and it has a lot to do with why she has found herself in trouble again and again throughout her life.
'Constantly, she pushes boundaries and has been in trouble with the law, but really all of it is because she is desperate to be loved.
'Her mom and dad separated when she was a child and ever since Michelle has been yearning for some stability in her life.
'Sadly after years of dating older women and men like Olivier Martinez, nothing seemed to work out for her.
' But now Cara has come along, who is so much younger than the women she normally dates, but suddenly Michelle is happy again.'
In recent years, former Lost star Michelle, who openly admits she is bisexual, has endured a string of broken relationships after dating French heartthrob and S.W.A.T co-star Olivier Martinez, Fast and Furious co-star Vin Diesel as well as model Claudette Lali, director Francesca De Sola and model Aleksandra Rastovic.
The source claims Michelle had a 'great thing' going with Terminator 3 actress Kristanna Loken - who strongly hinted to Advocate magazine that she was in a relationship with her in 2006, yet Michelle has never confirmed their relationship.
'Kristanna wanted to come out as a couple. She's proud to be bisexual, but Michelle wasn't ready to go public,' said the friend: 'So instead of working it out, Michelle ended it.
'Then she was left heartbroken a year later when she fell for another model/actress only to find out she had slept with someone else while she was away filming the movie Avatar.'
The actress has also found herself behind bars after being in trouble repeatedly with the law.
In March 2002, she was charged with assault and harassment when her girlfriend, Louise Ward, claimed the tough girl had attacked her in their New Jersey apartment.
Ward was left battered and bruised, but later dropped all charges against Michelle.
The friend said: 'Michelle can be intense and dive head first into romances. This can land her in hot water as she found out with Louise.
'Over the last 15-years there have been countless other examples of her disastrous love life.'
Just one year later Michelle found herself in trouble again when she appeared in court to face eight misdemeanor charges relating to two driving incidents, including a DUI and a hit and run
In 2004, she pleaded no contest to three of the charges, hit and run, drunken driving and driving with a suspended license and went to jail for 48 hours and was placed on probation for three years.
And in 2005, while filming ABC hit Lost in Hawaii, the stunning brunette was fined multiple times for speeding.
Later that year on December 1st she was arrested for drunk driving, to which she pleaded guilty and paid a $500 fine and spent five days in jail.
Due to this being a clear violation of her earlier drunk driving crimes, she was also sentenced to 60 days in jail, but due to overcrowding was released on the same day she entered.
And it's precisely this behavior that has left Cara's family a little fearful.
Michelle's close friend admitted: 'She's a very free spirit and before this relationship she has always been terrified of commitment.
“And because of her troubled past, many of them have essentially had to be her babysitter or a mother figure to her.
'So now Cara might be younger than her, but she honestly thinks this is 'the one'. Just before she met Cara she was talking about wanting a family within the next couple of years.

'She really wants a baby and wants one soon and now she has found Cara she thinks this could finally be the time to chase that dream.
'Sadly due to Michelle’s troubled past, Cara’s family are not so sure. They are not 100 per cent pro this relationship and are in some ways willing it to end.
'The 14-year age gap between the girls concerns them as does Michelle's wayward reputation.
'They know Cara has been swept off her feet by Michelle, who has dropped everything to be with her young love, but the family fear the relationship will end in nothing but disaster.
'I highly doubt at 21-years-old Cara is ready to start a family. She is no doubt currently smitten with Michelle, who dropped everything, including her girlfriend and friends, to be with her.
'But if anyone is going to get their heart broken in this relationship it's going to be Michelle. She will smother Cara, and wants to be around her 24 hours a day.'
The couple, who apparently met in January, were also seen attending Prince's secret gig at Ronnie Scott's club on Monday, February 17, and the Elle Style Awards the following evening before heading to Milan to close the autumn/winter fashion season.
They then hired a private jet last week to head to Milan Fashion Week, where Cara had a busy schedule. The pair were spotted in coordinating black outfits while carrying bags as they made their way to their airplane - while the Brit beauty's parents were also along for the trip.

After landing in Milan, Michelle sat with her love as she sat in hair and makeup backstage at the Fendi autumn/winter 2014 fashion show. They then flew back to London and are now believed to be on vacation.
